Health & Social Care

Cambridge National in Health and Social Care introduces students to the specialist knowledge and skills needed to work in various care settings. This subject is offered at KS4 only.

Underpinning the qualification is a focus on core values and communicating with individuals so as to maintain their dignity and sense of being valued. The practical aspects of the course cover First Aid, working with pre-school children and understanding food and nutrition for good health.

As well as these invaluable skills, the course is an insight into the essentials involved when working in a variety of professions including nursing, social worker, child care, residential care work and Occupational Health.

Curriculum and Qualifications

The OCR Level 1/2 Cambridge National Certificate in Health and Social Care consists of two mandatory units and two optional units. The mandatory units consists of one written exam and one unit of coursework. The curriculum covers the following topics:

  • Essential values of care for use with individuals in care settings.
  • Communicating and working with individuals in health, social care and early years settings.
  • Using basic first aid procedures.
  • Understanding the nutrients needed for good health.

Coursework tasks form the majority of the homework set at KS4. The work is set weekly on Classcharts, and all help sheets and other detailed information will be placed in Teams. The completed work will be submitted via Teams or printed and placed in the student coursework folders.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

  • In Year 10, students are encouraged to find work placements within the Health & Social Care sector for their Work Experience in the summer term.
  • We have close links with Kingwood Nursery School in Uffculme where students have the opportunity to observe and help with activities with pre-school children.
  • Students taking Food Preparation & Nutrition will be able to apply their knowledge and practical skills for part of the Health & Social Care course.
  • St John Ambulance run a one day practical First Aid Course at Uffculme School for the students in Year 11.
