In Food Preparation and Nutrition we want our pupils to have a passion for the subject and to be able to prepare and create a variety of foods with independence and confidence.
The department has two spacious and well equipped Food rooms and a Food storage area. This subject provides excellent cross-curricular links with subjects such as Science and PE and can provide many exciting opportunities for further study.
Curriculum and Qualifications
Key Stage 3
All pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 have Food and Nutrition lessons once a week for two terms, giving them the opportunity to gain experience both theoretically and practically in food related skills. The projects cover practical skills that link to theoretical topics within the new GCSE curriculum, helping provide an important general understanding for all, but also a base that can be built on for any pupils wishing to take the subject further.

Key Stage 4
At KS4 pupils have the opportunity to study AQA Food Preparation and Nutrition at GCSE. The course specification can be found here
The GCSE course covers the following topics:
- Food Preparation Skills
- Food Nutrition and Health
- Food Safety
- Food Science
- Food Provenance
- Food Choice
The course is 50% examination and 50% NEA (non-exam assessment). Pupils will undertake two NEA tasks in Year 11 during the Autumn and Spring Term. A mock exam is taken in Year 10 and the final examination is sat in the Summer Term of Year 11. Studying this subject provides essential life skills and knowledge but also opens pathways for many career opportunities.
Extra Curricular Opportunities
We think it is vital to provide students with extra-curricular opportunities where possible within the subject. Recently we have had practical and theory food workshops delivered by The Royal Marines EAT (Education Awareness Team), Food Specialists at Waitrose and outside guest speakers. We offer House competitions every term including Healthy Eating Week competitions and at present there is an after school Cookery Club available from Year 8 upwards.
